Turkish Bread

Recipe card for Turkish Bread.
Course: Baking

Ingredients

Ingredients
  • 3 cups Flour (approximately 360 grams): The base of your bread, providing structure and texture.
  • 1 cup Warm Milk (240 ml): Helps to create a soft, tender dough.
  • 1 cup Warm Water (240 ml): Activates the yeast and combines with the flour to form the dough.
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Salt (approximately 9 grams): Enhances the flavor of the bread.
  • 2 teaspoons Dry Yeast (approximately 7 grams): Leavens the dough, making the bread rise.
  • 2 tablespoons Olive Oil (30 ml): Adds richness and moisture to the dough.
  • 1/4 cup Chopped Parsley (approximately 15 grams): Adds a fresh, herbal note to the bread.
  • 1 teaspoon Chili Flakes (approximately 2 grams): Optional, for a subtle kick of heat.

Method

Preparation
  1. Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. In a separate bowl, mix the warm milk, warm water, and dry yeast. Let the yeast mixture sit for about 5-10 minutes, until it becomes frothy.
  2. Gradually pour the yeast mixture into the flour, mixing with a spoon or your hands until a dough begins to form. Add the olive oil and continue kneading the dough for about 10 minutes, until it's smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a bit more flour.
  3. First Rise: Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
  4. Shape the Bread: Once the dough has risen, gently punch it down to release any air bubbles. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and shape it into a round or oval loaf. You can also divide it into smaller portions to make individual bread rolls.
  5. Second Rise: Place the shaped dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover it again with the damp cloth and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  6. Prepare for Baking: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). If you like, brush the top of the dough with a little olive oil and sprinkle with chopped parsley and chili flakes for added flavor and visual appeal.
  7. Bake the Bread: Bake the bread in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped. If you're making smaller rolls, they may only need 15-20 minutes.
  8. Cool and Serve: Once baked, remove the bread from the oven and let it cool slightly on a wire rack before serving. Enjoy it warm with butter, cheese, or your favorite dip.
