Ingredients

For the Marinade
  • 1/2 cup Hoisin sauce Adds a delightful sweetness and depth; can be swapped with BBQ sauce if needed.
  • 1/4 cup Soy sauce Brings an umami punch; use tamari for gluten-free.
  • 2 tbsp Honey Infuses natural sweetness; maple syrup serves as a good alternative.
  • 2 tbsp Oyster sauce Contributes richness; omit or increase soy sauce for vegetarian-friendly options.
  • 1 tbsp Rice vinegar Adds a pop of acidity; apple cider vinegar works as a substitute.
  • 3 cloves Garlic (minced) Elevates the overall flavor; powdered garlic can be used in smaller amounts.
  • 1 tbsp Chinese five-spice powder A key aromatic mix; blend cinnamon, star anise, cloves, and ginger for a makeshift version.
  • 1 tbsp Sesame oil Introduces a nutty flavor; skip for those with nut allergies.
For the Chicken
  • 2 lbs Boneless, skinless chicken thighs The juiciest choice; substituted with breasts for a leaner option.
For the Glaze
  • 1/2 cup Reserved marinade Used to coat the chicken at the end for a luscious, sticky finish.

Equipment

  • Oven
  • mixing bowl
  • Saucepan
  • Baking sheet
  • Resealable bag

Method

Cooking Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, minced garlic, Chinese five-spice powder, and sesame oil until combined.
  3. Place your chicken thighs in a resealable bag. Pour half of the marinade over the chicken, seal the bag tightly, and refrigerate for a minimum of 2 hours or overnight.
  4. After marinating, let the chicken sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes. Lay the chicken on a baking sheet lined with foil.
  5. Bake the chicken in your preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
  6. In a saucepan, take the reserved marinade and bring it to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer for about 10 minutes, or until it thickens.
  7. Once cooked, brush your chicken with the thickened marinade and place it under the broiler for 2-3 minutes.
  8. After broiling, let the chicken rest for a few minutes before slicing and serve warm.
