Course: Baking

Ingredients

Ingredients
  • Wheat Flour (430 g): The foundation of this bread, wheat flour provides structure and texture. For a more wholesome version, you can substitute part of it with whole wheat flour.
  • Sugar (1 tablespoon): Sugar feeds the yeast, helping the dough rise quickly, and adds a touch of sweetness to balance the flavors.
  • Dry Yeast (7 g): Dry yeast is the leavening agent that makes the bread rise. It’s fast-acting and perfect for quick recipes like this one.
  • Salt (0.5 teaspoon): Salt enhances the flavor of the bread and regulates yeast activity, preventing the dough from rising too quickly.
  • Warm Water (220 ml): Warm water activates the yeast and helps form the dough. Make sure the water is warm but not hot, as too much heat can kill the yeast.
  • Olive Oil (20 ml): Olive oil adds moisture and richness to the bread, giving it a soft crumb and a subtle flavor. It also helps create a beautiful golden crust.

Method

Preparation
  1. Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the wheat flour, sugar, dry yeast, and salt. Mix well to distribute the ingredients evenly.
  2. Add Liquid Ingredients: Pour in the warm water and olive oil. Using a wooden spoon or your hands, mix until a sticky dough forms.
  3. Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Knead for about 5 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle in a little more flour, but avoid adding too much.
  4. Shape the Bread: Shape the dough into a round loaf or divide it into smaller rolls. Place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  5. Bake: Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F). Let the dough rest for a few minutes while the oven heats up, then bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  6. Cool and Serve: Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for a few minutes before slicing. Enjoy it warm with butter, jam, or your favorite toppings.
