How to Make Delicious Classic Vanilla Slice
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Unfold the chilled puff pastry sheets onto the prepared baking sheets. Dock the surface with a fork.
  3. Bake the sheets for 20–22 minutes until they turn a lovely golden brown.
  4. Combine whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, unsalted butter, and vanilla in a medium saucepan.
  5. Whisk flour with water in a separate bowl until smooth, creating a slurry.
  6. Temper the egg yolks by gradually whisking in a little of the hot milk mixture.
  7. Cook the custard mixture on medium heat, whisking constantly until it thickens.
  8. Strain the custard through a fine sieve and allow it to cool for about 5 minutes.
  9. Layer the dessert by placing one puff pastry sheet in the prepared pan, pour custard, and place second sheet on top.
  10. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 3-4 hours, or overnight for best results.
  11. Dust generously with powdered sugar right before serving, then slice into pieces.
