Preparation
- Prepare the YeastIn a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and stir gently. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy, indicating that the yeast is activated.
- Make the DoughIn a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the olive oil and the activated yeast mixture. Stir until the dough starts to come together. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Let the Dough RisePlace the dough in a lightly oiled bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
- Shape the BreadsticksPreheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release any air bubbles. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and roll it into a rectangle, about 1/2 inch thick. Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the dough into strips, about 1 inch wide.
- Bake the BreadsticksPlace the breadsticks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving a little space between each one. Brush them with melted butter and sprinkle with garlic powder, Parmesan cheese, and Italian seasoning, if desired. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the breadsticks are golden brown and slightly crispy on the outside.
- ServeOnce baked, remove the breadsticks from the oven and let them cool slightly. Serve warm with marinara sauce, a side salad, or as an accompaniment to your favorite pasta dish.
